Announcing Battle on the Bay: Vikings Invade!

Battle on the Bay: Vikings Invade
13-15 September 2013
Lochmere & Storvik Baronial Birthdays
Storvik Investiture

It is a fine, clear morning in 892. The waters of Patuxentsfjord ripple in the light breeze. Four Viking villages gather at this place of heroes, renowned in the sagas, to vie for the favor of the new overlord of this place called Storvik. The contests shall try not only the strength of their shields, but also the bend of their bows and the craft of their hands, for all shall be required to help the new sea lord rule wisely and well.

The Barony of Storvik and the Barony of Lochmere welcome you to Battle on the Bay: Vikings Invade!

Bragging Contest

After feast, we will be reviving the Old Norse/Anglo-Saxon tradition of “The Boast”.  Lord Hrothgar will be challenging all – fighters, artisans, and travelers, young, old and all those in between to a bragging competition.  Come brag about your deeds – of this day or the past.  Tell tales of foes you have vanquished, monsters you have slain, and wonders you have witnessed.  So raise a glass and celebrate your comrades’ achievements while you tell us of your own.

Lord Hrothgar will be sweeten the contest by offering a large jar of honey (12lbs) to the person with the best boast.

An outline of the what an Old Norse boast has been uploaded to the site.

Activities at Battle on the Bay 2013

General Theme

Each person attending the event will become a member of one of the four villages, and will have a role in helping his or her clan secure victory. Spectators will do more than simply cheer on their warriors, archers, and craftsmen: they will provide concrete assistance in the contests.

Martial Activities

Melee will be the order of the day as in years past. Questions about the fighting and format should be directed to the Marshal-in-Charge, Chevalier Joselin d’Outremer at joselindoutremer AT gmail DOT com.

Check back here frequently for updates and a detailed description of the fighting.

Arts & Sciences Activities

Viking-themed competitions include mead brewing, novice display, and open display.

Several classes are being planned including classes on nalbinding, Viking wire weaving, mead making, insular uncial and more.

After feast, join us in the Mead Hall for bardic, camaraderie, and, of course, mead!

Mistress Nuala of Needwood is coordinating Arts & Sciences Activities.

Performing Arts

In keeping with the Viking theme, we are looking for early period performers. Please contact Lady Madeleine Rose de Cardeville at playurcardswell AT verizon DOT net.

Feast Information

Lady Tirzah MacCrudden is planning a Viking-inspired feast. Feast seats are limited; please pre-register. Direct questions or dietary concerns to Lady Tirzah at lltirzah AT gmail DOT com.
